Today’s Sunday listen will be slightly different. It’s a collection of free downloads and videos of bands I love from a label I love and whatever else I can remember would fit. My favourite label Alcopop! Records are releasing some nice singles and EPs this month: Gunning For Tamar, The Social Club and Freeze The Atlantic.
“Astronaut-Abort” is taken from their newest EP “Time Trophies” which is going to be released on the 19. March as a boring download OR a f***ing amazing and strictly limited wristwatch! It’s a beauty but it’s not only the format of the EP that is awesome. The EP is itself is - just as I expect it from GFT - awesome, too. I little while ago I already shared “Chocolate Hooves” with you which is the second track on the EP. The title track itself is certainly an ear worm in the best possible way. It’s Rock music, sounding very organic, rich of melodies and like my companion for the upcoming Spring. Maybe it’s because I have seen them live a couple of times and met them a few times, maybe it’s because I utterly love these four boys from Oxford a lot but I think nevertheless that you can hear the energy and the passion they have for making music in every second of every song. The EP will come with two remixes: “Time Trophies (Maybeshewill Remix)” and “Chocolate Hooves (Junior Johnny Foreigner Old School Owen Fromix)”.
They will be touring with lovely Jumping Ships, they will be touring in the UK and in Europe (I hope they will find their way back to Berlin, too):

I love this press photo of GFT (otherwise I wouldn’t post it.):
This band is pure fun when you watch them live. I saw them at the Alcopop Christmas Party (yes, back in December) and they are absolutely hilarious while making absolutely good music. I remember how I thought how easily they could fit a huge stage and make a big crowd dance just as they did in this small club. Last Monday they released the second of three EP’s on Alcopop! Records - after “For Drinking” the “For Dancing” EP is the logical follower (I heard some need to drink before they are able to let loose and dance). The song is called “Somewhere Between The Rut And The Groove”. I could tell you how they remind me of one of my most favourite bands from California, USA, in the best possible way* but I don’t think you know The Good Fiction. I think both bands drop into the same genre would be something like Indie Rock, The Social Club “just” add some Keys to it. The choruses are great and all is made to be sung along at the top of your lungs. I quite love this band.
*somewhat similar but not replaceable.
Not a free download of their newest single or a b-side but a video! It’s their newest single (also released last Monday) “Volcanoes” featuring Liv Puente - a “classic” performance video, still not giving you an idea how they really are live (much more energetic):
I could tell you that this 5-piece is made of 1/5 Hundred Reasons and 1/5 Reuben and 3/5 awesomeness but I always wonder why. For me it doesn’t matter because the only thing that counts for me is the music they make now. And what they make now, is what I like. It’s guitars, it’s drums. It’s rock. The single is taken from their forthcoming album but I have no idea what it’s called or when it is going to be released. I hope it is soon.
And they are “on tour” as well (does anyone consider two dates a tour already? I don’t. Maybe there are more coming up?):
1. April, Barfly, London
4. April, The Boileroom, Guildford
Go and see them as well. Another band I can just highly recommend from my own experience. Hm, not a new release but as we all love good free music, how about a song from their last EP “Colour By Numbers”? You can download “The Alibi” below. It’s still as good as it has been back then (not as long ago as you might think).
Have a good Sunday,
Do I need to say more than Alcopop Records is my favourite record label in the world? It’s a full package - great signings with great music and great people and lots of passion from all sides. And the best names for compilations. If not the title alone makes you download and listen to this free 6 track strong compilation then maybe this: the music on it is really, really good. It’s a bit for everyone, just like the label is. It’s not stuck on one music style but if there is something every artist on this label has in common it’s a love for sweet melodies. I love sweet melodies. Some are more rock, some pop, some a bit punk and some folky (folky is my new favourite word).
This sampler shows a bit of this years autumn at Alcopop and it is for free. Jumping Ships have released their newest EP “Standard Bearer” not long ago, the new album of Johnny Foreigner “Vs Everything” is now out as well and both are awesome. Light Guides have an EP out. The Social Club and Katie Malco will follow with their releases this month (and are already up for pre-order). And My Firth Tooth’s album “Territories” was released earlier this year. I think Katie Malco is one of my most favourite discoveries of this year, if not the favourite and the new EP is just wonderful. “Johnny” is my favourite track of it and so it’s nice you’ll have it as a sneak peak here. I am not so sure how long I know Jumping Ships - it feels like they are in my playlist forever because I have listened to their music so much. The Social Club might be on the way there. And My Firth Tooth and Johnny Foreigner? The have a spot in my heart for ages already.
Have a good Sunday,
